There are several ways in which legitimate emails can get lost, and as a result never reach their destination.
The most trivial is when using a wrong email address. While this may be very annoying, it is still in the hands of the sender and he can make sure there is no mistake there.
But what about those areas outside of the sender's control?
Recent studies show two such critical points in which emails get lost:
Usually for two reasons:
- Legitimate emails accidentally filtered as spam and thereafter deleted.

- Legitimate emails rejected due to overloaded servers (usually the result of spam/virus/other attacks on the network).

"A recent study by Assurance Systems indicates that approximately 12% of all e-mail messages sent to valid e-mail addresses at the top nine ISPs and webmail providers did not end up in the inbox as intended."
